Sometimes God Has a Better Idea." (Sometimes???)

"Sometimes God Has A Better Idea" Rick Warren
Sometimes God Has a Better Idea by Rick Warren, May 21, 2014, www.rickwarren.org

Sometimes? Only sometimes?  Really??  Is he serious?  Think about that one. Doesn't Pastor Rick know that God's ways are above our ways?  Ideas, thoughts, plans,... "whatever" the issue at hand, God is always "better".  God is holy, perfect and righteous, and true.

Isaiah 55:8- 9 reads, "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts."

Perhaps you like that title.  After all, Rick is certainly getting people's attention with a comment that affirms people and gives them the idea that they are filled with good ideas most of the time.  They read this and can digest it so much easier than any notion of needing to repent.... because they like hearing that they are almost, but not quite, as smart and wise as God.  "Sometimes, God has a better idea," then they do.

Rick is twisting and changing the scriptures. He is not telling us that  God's ideas are always higher, and always better.  He is not telling people that they must repent of evil an turn to God.  Instead he uses the scriptures in order to tell you what he thinks you want to hear, but his agenda is not to give you salvation from your sin or to help you hear and know God, instead the point of it all is to get you listening to and thinking like,  Rick Warren.

To do that, (according to Rick)  "have the proper attitude:"

"James 4 tells us the proper attitude to have: "Now listen you who say 'Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business, and make money.' Why, you don't even know what will happen tomorrow. ... Instead, you ought to say, 'If it is the Lord's will, we will live and do this or that.'"
Sometimes God Has a Better Idea by Rick Warren, May 21, 2014, www.rickwarren.org

Rick is reading from the book of James, and he is rightly reading from a translation, not a paraphrase like he often does.  Rick then takes the opportunity to interpret that passage of scripture, for us.  He says,

"James is saying it's OK to make plans, but just realize that ultimately God has the final word..."

Is James here saying, "It's okay to make plans?"  (Or did Rick just paraphrase that?)  Did James write anything about God having "the final word?"

Rick, believe it or not, was giving you a "switcher-roo."  Rick is not being honest with the text.

He mentioned nothing about a change in you thinking... nothing about you desiring to be in the will of God, about changing your way of thinking from doing what you want and think is best, to looking to God's direction, leading and even unto him giving you the ability to do what you do.  Nope.  Rick tells you that "James" says, "it's okay to make plans,: (go ahead, made your own plans,) just be sure to realize that "ultimately, God has the final word." And note who God is made out to be.... for Rick makes it sound like God, with his "final Word" will be a bit heavy-handed with you in the end.

Rick can help you with this though.... He will tell you the "right attitude" to have:

"The right attitude is to always keep your plans submitted to God. Make your plans but say, "God, if this is what You want, this is the direction I'm going to go. I'm doing this with flexible faith."

(Unfortunately it's a wrong attitude.  Rick explains God as some kind of a taskmaster who demands you submission, meanwhile he has you :telling" God what you will and will not do.)

Do you suppose that God is bound to be impressed with you when you "tell" him how you will be doing what you think he wants you to do,  with "flexible faith."

Is this concept of a faith that is flexible, even in the Bible?  "Faith is to be unwavering,  (Hebrews 10:23)  (not  variable depending upon a circumstance.)One can Have "great Faith" (Matthew 8:10) In fact, no matter how big or small a faith your faith may be as anytime, faith is faith and even a little can do great things. (Luke 17:6) You either have faith in God, or you don't. (Mark 4:40)    "Flexible faith might be a great sounding concept to you, but it is only a fine sounding concept that Rick simply made up.

Believing that you need to have "flexible faith" is the kind of thing that will allow your once immovable, unshakable faith in God to be reshaped.  Neither yes or no, neither hot nor cold, you r faith will be "flexible" and you will develop that uncanny ability, like Rick, to shape shift your faith and your words, in every crowd.

This comes about by realizing how great you are.. how great your ideas, and dreams "really"
are... while of course being willling to recognize  that "Sometimes: God has a better idea." But if you keep going down this path of thinking, then before long, you will think yourself quite complete... rich, increased with goods, in need of nothing, (knowing not that you are
wretched and miserable, poor, blind and naked... completely in need of God. )

Jesus has some words for all of us on this matter:

I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.

On Faith and Fear

"God is more interested in growing your faith than relieving your your fear"
What bible is he preaching from?  How much faith does it take?

Luke 17:6
And the Lord said, If ye had faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye might say unto this sycamine tree, Be thou plucked up by the root, and be thou planted in the sea; and it should obey you.

And as for reliving your fears... Bible teahes differently than Rick... for God is the God of all comfort.
Rick is a rascal if he says that God is not interested in relieving our fears.

Does God not care about you and your fears? Yes, he does.

2 Corinthians 1:4
Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves arecomforted of God.

Psalm 34:4
I sought the Lord, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.

Psalm 118:6
The Lord is on my side; I will not fear: what can man do unto me?

Luke 12:32
Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom.

1 John 4:18
There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.

POWER!

Rick says,
"Did you know God does not bless self-reliant people? He blesses people who are dependent upon him and surrendered to him. God wants to use you, but you must live by his power."                                               ~ Rick Warren

Don't you want God's blessing?
You do not want to be "self reliant" do you?
(Keep in mind self-reliance, in some contexts, is a very good thing... and Rick does not differentiate as to what he means... he just says "self reliance" is BAD.

"God does not bless self -reliant people."

Truth be told, God causes the rain to fall on all people... even those not dependent upon him.  Jesus himself said," he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust."

As for "blessings"  In Ephesians 1, it says, Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight." (NIV)  Or if you read the Bible that has no copyright, the KJV,  it also saysBlessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ: According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love."

What is the power of God that you are seeking to get anyhow? (God's power might be pretty amazing to obtain.)

But Rick doesn't teach, let alone, "preach" that.  If you listen to Rick, there is no blessing from God... no God -power upon your life... until you get your act together.  "God WANTS to use you, but"....... he can't.... until you get it right and "live by his power."  To do that you first have to get his power.  How do you GET God's power?

You have to do three things... According to Rick Warren:
1. "You get God’s power by praying."
2. "You get God’s power by taking risks to obey God."
3." You get God’s power by not giving up."
Get God's Power by Rick Warren 10/26/2013

Odd. He said nothing about Jesus.  He did say that :

1. "You get God's power b
y praying"?
How do we know he is talking to Christians and not just everybody and anybody? For us who are being saved, the preaching of the cross is the "power of God."  (1 Cor. 1:17-19)   All kinds of various religions and religious people "pray."  What makes "prayer"  the means of obtaining power from God?

And prayer itself is not enough.... you must also take risks.

2. "Taking risks to obey God?".....  Why would it be "risky" to obey God?  Obedience usually KEEPS ONE OUT OF TROUBLE...or OUT of DANGER..  It's odd for a pastor to suggest that one "take a risk" to "OBEY God." God is good and it is a respite, a shelter, and a blessing to do what is right and good.  It's not "risky" to be obedient to God.  This is confusion.  Is it risky to obey God or will it bring you blessing?

3.  "Not giving up."
Not giving up what?
Risky Rick does not say. So. apparently, you can simply imagine your persistence to be in regard to anything you want it to be... or mean.  It probably means that you will never ever.. ever.. be able to stop doing, doing doing.  You will never do absolutely nothing... and simply find
rest.

God loves you and wants you to find rest in Him.

Jesus is the Christ who died that your sins would be forgiven..and Jesus calls you to rest in receiving God's intervention.  It is God's love and mercy and grace that we see and find in Jesus Christ... in Him is "all-power."

In Christ, you have  forgiveness of your sin. There is no imperative that you must get God's power by doing three things,  This good news is being proclaimed by those who follow Him and say yes to God's truth.  Believe God.... then  His power) is upon you and you will be saved.  Learn of Jesus and you will find rest for your souls... (Matthew 11:29.)

Why does Rick Warren circumvent the " good news about Jesus and finding rest in Him? "

Rick Warren's "biblical" concept of rest is enjoying life... and taking time for relaxation.
In factin another article, at pastors.com, Rick says, "Jesus insisted his disciples take a vacation."

Jeremiah 6:15-17 (KJV)

Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination?

nay, they were not at all ashamed,
 neither could they blush:
therefore they shall fall among them that fall:
at the time that I visit them they shall be cast down, saith the Lord.
Thus saith the Lord, Stand ye in the ways, and see,
and ask for the old paths, where is the good way,
and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls.

But they said, We will not walk therein.
Also I set watchmen over you, saying,
Hearken to the sound of the trumpet.
But they said, We will not hearken

Half a Tree

Purpose Driven
Book Cover for
Tenth Anniversary Special Edition
The Purpose Driven Life

(His book is now "redesigned")

Trees.  They sure are beautiful!  Not only that, there are so many kinds!  Their fruit, their shade, their  stature, their structure, the way they grace the land with their uniqueness and give life, as well as harbor the lives of creatures seeking shelter is all quite amazing.  There's a lot of trees mentioned in the scriptures too, so it's no wonder Rick Warren choose something as meaningful as a tree for the cover of his newly released book pictured above, the NEW "Purpose Driven Life" book.

Rick has been quoted in several articles talking about his new book and the reason for it.  He says, "Our world has changed dramatically over the last decade, but God's word is always relevant.  I believe now, more than ever, people need the hope, joy, and peace that comes from living our their God-given purpose." True to form, Rick delivers the information he does about things only half-right.  You see, God's word IS always relevant, and people do need hope... joy.... peace.... but what on Earth is that part about finding their God-given purpose being the thing that will give them that hope and joy and peace?  This half truth, half bible reality thing he deals out on a regular basis, makes it quite appropriate that he uses only half a tree on the cover of his new book.

Is it really half a tree?  Yes.  Note how "forty" is a special number, indicative of Rick's 40 Day "campaign" idea (which, by the way, he learned  "from the Communists." <---click here to see that post.) The picture he choose for his book from the many submissions from graphic artists everywhere, displays only half of a tree with lots of leaves.  There's no fruit, just leaves; and count them.  It is purposely pictured as a "tree with forty leaves."  The thing is, it is not a tree, but really only half of a tree.

Somehow Matthew 21:19 comes to mind.... Have you read that lately?

But back to that book and the tree... no, the half of a tree.  Zondervan's marketing executive behind the book's republication told the Christian Post that there appears to be divine intervention in the selection that was made for it's cover.  He has a point.  The cover is quite telling.  As someone once said, "A picture is worth a thousand words?"  Rick's half-truths are right there on the cover!

Make no mistake, God's word does not come back void.  There are some scripture references and even perhaps some encouraging words in this book, but the truth is that there are some important and key elements of the Christian faith that are, like half of the tree on the cover, missing from this book, often omitted or dismissed by Rick's programs, projects and peace plans.  Just the same, God's word is powerful, sharper than a two edged sword.  It will do the work that he desires, the bible tells us so, but  do we have eyes to see and ears to hear what He says?

Church enthusiasts and the leaders interested in building large church followings have been... for ten year now, embracing Rick's false vision of hope in finding this thing called "purpose."  It is a find sounding replacement for repenting, and being found.... believing in Jesus Christ.   Now rewritten and republished, the book is being promoted shamelessly once again.  In usual Pupose Driven fanfare, Zondervan announces that over the last ten years, " the Purpose Driven Life has transformed countless lives, selling more that 32 million copies worldwide." (They probably hope people who bought the first will by this one too at $26.00 a book.

PurposeDriven.com blows their own horn of plenty too.  They tell us about Rick's new book is the "best selling nonfiction hardtack book in history.   The announce, "10 years ago, Pastor Rick Warren wrote The Purpose Driven Life that changed the way millions of people understand their meaning and significance. This book has since become the best selling nonfiction hardback book in history.   Is that true?   (See: wikipedia)

Rick Warren himself, promotes his book saying things like, "Three things..have changed my life…2 ½ years ago  One was the overwhelming success of the book. It has been the best selling book in the world now for 3 years…in 50 languages Publisher’s weekly said it’s the best selling hardback book in American history… "
Rick Warren.  KBMI (Moody Bible) OPEN LINE PROGRAM Interview,  October 7, 2005

Do you suppose he thinks his book, his thoughts, his widsom about the church is greater than what we learn in the bible?
"We need more than the Bible to grow we need other believers."
Chapter 17,  Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren

We need more than the Bible to grow?

"No matter how wonderful a translation, it has limitations."
Chapter 27 Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren

The Bible always has limitations?
"No matter how wonderful  a translation it is.... "  ???
Does this mean it is flawed no matter what?

"The last thing many believers need today is to go to another Bible Study."
Chapter 29, Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren

Of course, a Bible Study is the LAST thing
they nee.... because when people hear the whole gospel
or study the words of the Bible,
Rick cannot pull the wool over their eyes
with his fancy double speak.

He will happily give them a six week purpose-driven anything to study though.

So, while Rick seems to embrace the bible, the scriptures... and the importance of repentance and faith in Jesus Christ, he only half embraces it.  The bible is not enough to Rick.  No Translation is adequate.  The last thing a believer needs to do is go to another Bible Study..... but hey... you can bet he believes that same person needs to purchase his book, read it and join a life group study about Rick's book or his Peace Plan.

In the Scriptures, wisdom is like a tree..... not half a tree. Wisdom is wholesome, vibrant, life-giving, and fruitful.

Wisdom?

  1. She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her:
and happy is every one that retaineth her.

  2. The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life;
and he that winneth souls is wise.

  3. Hope deferred maketh the heart sick
     but when the desire cometh,
it is a tree of life.

A wholesome tongue is a tree of life
    but perverseness therein
is a breach in the spirit.

  4. He that hath an ear, let him hear what the
Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that
overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life,
which is in the midst of the paradise of God.

There is a Purpose Driven tree that is only half a tree, but God's Tree of Life, is complete.
Revelation 22:1-2

And he shewed me a pure river of water of life,
clear as crystal, proceeding out
of the throne of God
and of the Lamb.
In the midst of the street of it,
and on either side of the river,
was there the tree of life,
which bare twelve manner of fruits,
and yielded her fruit every month:
and the leaves of the tree
were for the healing
of the nations.

Instant Obedience...

The article for this topic is called,
"God smiles when we obey wholeheartedly"  By Pastor Rick  (lower case letters are in the original article)

In this article published December 12, 2011,
 at Purpose Driven Connections, (purposedriven.com.)
Rick says, "God smiles when you are obedient to him
and that if you do not do whatever God asks
without reservation, or hesitation them
God is not smiling.... but is it ture?
Read this article in it's
entirety by
clicking:  here.
It begins with
a Bible Verse,
"Just tell me what to do and I will do it, Lord. As long as I live I'll wholeheartedly obey." Psalm 119:33 (LB)
This happens to be a verse from the Living Bible, which though good words, is not a TRANSLATION.  This is what the KJV says....
"Teach me, O LORD, the way of thy statutes; and I shall keep it unto the end. "

This is what the NIV tells us:
"Teach me, LORD, the way of your decrees, that I may follow it to the end"

Quite different from: "Just tell me what to do and I will do it, Lord. As long as I live I'll wholeheartedly obey."

Do you get the idea that he choose
this passage from this particular
rendering to use the word "obey?"

It's obvious.  With all the Bible citations Rick uses being so different all the time, it is easy to see that the choice of Bible text Rick uses all depends upon the particular idea or word Rick wants most too emphasize or convey..   In this case it is the idea that if we love God, then whole heartedly....
that is without reservation, question or hesitation... is the way to do it. If we do then, then God "smiles"

Rick writes:

"God smiles when we obey him wholeheartedly. That means doing whatever God asks without reservation or hesitation. You don't procrastinate and say, "I'll pray about it." You do it without delay. Every parent knows that delayed obedience is really disobedience.

God doesn't owe you an explanation or reason for everything he asks you to do. Understanding can wait, but obedience can't. Instant obedience will teach you more about God than a lifetime of Bible discussions. In fact, you will never understand some commands until you obey them first. Obedience unlocks understanding."

Let's think and reason this a little....

1.  Rick makes the remark that "a lifetime of Bible discussions is not equivalent to instant obedience."

2.  He makes it sound like you will always know what God wants if you obey...
3. HE makes it sound like he is only talking about one act of "instant" obedience and not a whole lifetime of instant obedience.  IS that the case?  Is this what he is saying, and is it true?

Contrary to what Rick is informing you and I, you or I would never be able to be instantly obedient all the time to the commands of God.  Remember the Ten Commandments? There is only one person who ever kept them perfectly and it was not you or me. That person, is Jesus.

Instead of telling you and I this, Rick says, "Instant obedience will teach you more about God than a lifetime of Bible discussions."

On the other hand, if you spent some time in a Bible discussion
you might actually hear or read the gospel,
learn how Jesus, the perfect man ,
died on the cross,
was buried and rose again from death,
and that he died for our sin.,
the sins of the world.
Rick does not mention this....
and he forgets to mention Jesus too.

Jesus was the only perfect man...

Rick says,
"Often we try to offer God partial obedience. We want to pick and choose the commands we obey. We make a list of the commands we like and obey those while ignoring the ones we think are unreasonable, difficult, expensive, or unpopular. I'll attend church but I won't tithe. I'll read my Bible but won't forgive the person who hurt me. Yet partial obedience is disobedience."

Well, Rick, partial truth is not truth at all. (untruth)

In the Gospels, attending "church" is not a "commandment." Tithing is not a commandment. Reading a bible is not a commandment either... Believing in Jesus, is.  And you know what?  It sounds like Rick just made up that list, (attending church, tithing,) because he likes those best!

In addition, as he goes on, he quotes more from the Living Bible, as well as the CEW, and the TEV.  These are all used because Rick does not even rest in the use of one version of scripture.  This is because, as mentioned in the beginning of this article,  he uses the various versions to promote his own advantage,  all depending on what he wants "Christians "to believe.

Rick delivers his punch line at the end, saying,
"God's Word is clear that you can't earn your salvation. It comes only by grace, not your effort."
So Rick?   Is this comment because someone listening to you, reading what you had to say might have thought that you were saying that obedience earns salvation?  Surely, our salvation makes God smile too, but you have not even mentioned salvation until now. You said obedience makes him smile; you said, "Instant obedience will teach you more about God than a lifetime of Bible discussions.;" but you never mentioned the obedient One, Jesus?  You have to use some biblical term to cover... like "grace?"

You just have to  wonder!

But,. let's talk about instant obedience....
Jesus told a parable....of two sons...
He said,
What do you think?
There was a man who had two sons.
He went to the first and said,
‘Son, go and work today in the vineyard.’
   “‘I will not,’ he answered,
but later he changed his mind and went.
“Then the father went to the other son
and said the same thing. He answered,
‘I will, sir,’ but he did not go.
Which of the two did what his father wanted?”
Think about it.  What would your answer be?
 your answer here

“The first,” they answered.

To these people who answered correctly,
   Jesus said to them,
“Truly I tell you, the tax collectors
and the prostitutes are entering the kingdom
of God ahead of you.  For John came to you
to show you the way of righteousness,
and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors
and the prostitutes did. And even after you saw this,
you did not repent and believe him.

Obedience, true obedience is believing on the one sent by God,....
                                                                                                     Jesus.

Tools that Transform

1 Kings 6:7 reads:
"The house,
while it was being built,
was built of stone prepared at the quarry,
and there was neither hammer
nor axe
nor any iron tool heard in the house
while it was being built."  NASB

Interesting.

Jesus said, he would build his church upon a rock.  He would build it.. then he called Simon, "Peter" which means, "little stone."

Stone upon stone, this passage in Kings tell us that the temple of God was being built and no tool was being used while it was being built.  All the craftsmanship was done at the quarry where the rocks originated from... right there.  They were brought in ready for service and it was built.t.

You have to ask then, why Rick is so intent on "using tools" within the church, to build (and grow) the church?

Someone is building something and they are using "tools" to do it.

TOOLS
        TOOLS
               TOOLS...

Rick Warren often talks about pastors using various "tools of the trade," in fact his special website for pastors to access is his  "Ministry Toolbox."

 But wait, there's more....

A recent ad at saddleback.com advertises preaching tools.... It reads, "Revolutionize your sermon preparation by using the library of tools that Rick Warren uses"

A Christianity Today article is titled, "Three Tools Saddleback Uses to Help People Grow."

 More "tools".... here.

One gets the impression Rick is a tool salesman.  He even sells Christmas tools.

Here a tool, there a tool, everywhere a tool, tool.  (BE sure to edit search out the word "tool" on these pages!)

There must be a lot of busy  people running around...
building
        building
                  building.

What tool do YOU use???
