Tithing is a "Spiritual Habit"

"The reason I tithe is to draw me closer to God. "
Spiritual Habits Of Effective People: Tithing  BY RICK WARREN — MAY 21, 2014

"If I make $100, I give $10 back to God; if I make $1000, I give $100 back to God. I get to keep 90 percent but I give 10 percent to him. Why would anybody have to do that? Because God says so and that’s reason enough. If you don’t do it, you’re disobeying God.  "

Spiritual Habits Of Effective People: Tithing  BY RICK WARREN — MAY 21, 2014

"It, (tithing) helps me develop the characteristics of God because “God so loved the world that he gave” (John 3:16). If you want to become like Jesus,
you must learn to be a giver."
Spiritual Habits Of Effective People: Tithing  BY RICK WARREN — MAY 21, 2014

Yes....Rick teaches people to give him ten percent of all their earnings.   He will even help them do the math.  After tithing, remember, you get to keep 90 percent!  and to encourage you he has you thinking of how God so loved the world that he gave" too... does this mean that God gave" ten percent"?   Funny, Rick doesn;t mention that God gave Jesus, or why.  He does tell you what you MUST do.... that is, if you want to learn to be "like Jesus."

(Don't you want to be a ten percent  "giver" .....just like Jesus was?)

Rick here instructs you to give to God but he is the actual benefactor of his tithing congregation in many ways. There is nothing quite like amassing a little fortune for yourself by telling people that if they do not give you ten percent of their earnings.... they are "disobeying God."

Thanks Be to Mastercard

According to Vincent Funaro of the Christian Post.  Rick Warren made an appearance on ABC's "The View" and commented:
"Mastercard saved my marriage. We were making $800 a month [years ago], and my counseling bill was $100 a week and I racked up $1500 on a bill, and I should say Marriage Priceless,"

"When people say, I don't have the money to afford counseling, I say well how much is your happiness worth, I would pay a million bucks for what I've got today [with my wife]. This is my best friend,"

Is he joking or not bout the MasterCard comment?

Vincent commented that: "Warren explained that it takes God, grace and forgiveness to make a marriage work, with the latter of these being such a crucial element. " and quoted Rick Warren as explaining:

"A great marriage is really the union of two great forgivers."

Remove the adjectives.  We are talking about marriage.
WHAT is marriage the "union" of?

Rick essentially declares that marriage is the union of two forgivers.  Funny, his definition of a marriage... (even with the adjective of "great" added)  is lacking some real definition of marriage.  Maybe you just have to look at it in context.  HE is talking about earning to forgive.... making the point that forgiveness in marriage is important... right?  Well, brothers and sisters with good relationships forgive one another.  Friends forgive.  Employers forgive employees and the other way around .... forgiveness helps all relationships.  A real definition of marriage is not simply the union of "two forgivers. The union of marriage is that of a man and a woman who love one another, not simply two great forgivers."  The union of marriage  is man and woman.... and ideally they have love for one another.

Besides, it's important to note that great forgivers do not come about naturally.  Forgiving others can be a very difficult thing to do.  In fact, few of us are even very good at it.  However, the greatest forgiver of all is not you or me.  The greatest forgiver is God and he has ordained the complete forgiveness of our sins against God and against one another through Jesus Christ.  It is in Christ that we learn how to forgive... but Rick makes not mention of this.

On another note, "how much is your happiness worth?"

Well,  Rick says he would pay a million bucks.

Maybe this is just a colloquial comment...( a figure of speech?)  After talking about is own going into debt for marital counselling Rick uses this concept to express his love for his wife, but the message is not that money cannot buy you happiness. No.  It is quite the opposite.  Apparently it can.  Rick praises the use of his MasterCard in helping hims gain this happiness in his marriage (no matter the cost.)  What is he telling people?  Why?  And most importantly, what does he leave out?

Christian people know better.  Is it, or is it not  MasterCard that saved Ricks marriage?
Will just "any" mental health counsel out there in the world about your marriage help you and give you the fantastic relationship it helped Rick have?

It is sooooooooooooo strange that a Christian "pastor" would neglect to talk real and forthright about the very things of God.  Strange too is that he would publicly give credit to MasterCard instead of God, while at the same time insist that God told him prophetically that he and Kay would marry.

In Rick Warren's new unauthorized biography, we learn that Kay and Rick were virtual strangers who did not love each other when they married.  Rick says God clearly told him that Kay was who he would marry, even though he didn't love her and she was in love with his best friend.  Apparently, we are to believe that theirs was a match made in heaven.... in turmoil from the beginning...

but we can all rest assured it's all great now because it has been fixed by good marital (mental health) counselling, thanks be to MasterCard.

Fishing with Rick

Fish Think

"If you’re going
to be good at fishing,
you’ve got to learn
to think like a fish"
-Rick Warren
To Catch Fish, Learn To think Like Them
by Rick Warren,
 11/16/12
Christian Post,

Here is the first two lines of Rick's article:

"If you’re going to be good at fishing, you’ve got to learn to think like a fish.  If you’re going to be an effective fisher of men, you’ve got to think like a lost person."

Really?   This is earthly thinking.

Now that you are a believer in Jesus Christ, you’ve got to learn to think like a lost person?  Did he really just teach that?

If you believe that line of malarkey for one minute, then the proverbial "wool" has just been pulled over your eyes!  This is hardly biblical advice.   In fact, young Timothy was encouraged to "preach the word," in season and out of season. (2 Timothy 4:2)    This would infer that so called,"unbelievers" were as fair game as anyone, anytime to hear God's Word preached to them.  Besides, is it really so very difficult to do?  Is it hard to be an unbeliever- you know, gratify self instead of  walk in the holy spirit, hate God's authority. and just plain think like " a lost person?" Christian, is thinking like an unbeliever, (whatever that means) s something that you must "learn" how to do?

Rick suggests that it is hard and would even have you believe that Christians are pretty bad at doing this, but bad enough as it is to be a "Christian" who has no concept of what it is like to be a "lost person,"  look out, "pastors" are even worse, according to Rick.   Rick makes himself out to be even worse than most because he's a son-of- a-pastor!  (and you know how BAD they are! Rick here, will tell you:

"Here’s the problem. Unfortunately, the longer you are a Christian, the less you think like an unbeliever. I don’t think like a non-Christian; I think like a Christian. In fact, I think like a pastor. That’s even worse! It’s two generations removed from the people I want to reach." -Rick Warren
To Catch Fish, Learn To think Like Them by Rick Warren, 11/16/12 Christian Post, christianpost.com

"If you’re going to understand and reach non-Christians, you’ve got to begin with their mindset.  The Bible says in Luke 6, “Jesus knew what they were thinking” (GW). In fact, multiple times in Scripture we read that Jesus knew what the people whom he was ministering to were thinking. Jesus gives us a great example of someone thinking like a fish."-Rick Warren
To Catch Fish, Learn To think Like Them by Rick Warren, 11/16/12 Christian Post, christianpost.com

Jesus knew their thoughts because he is omniscient...
not because he has a grip on fish think.
This was not some technique he happened to have mastered
and it certainly was not instructed of the disciples, not something
they needed to do learn to do before they went out doing the "Great Comission,"
(making disciples of every nation.)

Now that you see through wool dimly... Rick will enlighten you about how wrong the church is.... (well, all those many churches, but not those like his own:)

"Unfortunately, many churches don't take the time to understand the people they want to reach and they don't have a strategy. They want to win people to Christ as long as it can be done in a comfortable way."-Rick Warren

Rick Warren: Jesus gave five fishing guidelines for evangelism By Jon Walker,

(Those not like his own.... those "small churches" are even labeled by Rick as "selfish."

"To reach unbelievers you have to move outside your own comfort zone and do things that often feel awkward and uncomfortable to you. It takes unselfish people to grow a church. Lost people have a lot of problems and their lives are messy. Its not by accident that Jesus compared evangelism to fishing. Fishing is often messy and smelly. So many churches want the fish they catch to be prescaled, gutted, cleaned and cooked. That's why they never reach anyone." - Rick Warren

Becoming a Purpose Driven Church, Part One, (an interview with Jon Walker,) By Rick Warren, Pastors.com

And here's another teaching about "fishing." In this one he teaches that your bills get paid if you focus on evangelism.  Heck, the  money just pours out from those fishes mouths!  (He uses Matthew 17:27 as an example!)  Apparently, Rick thinks that the purpose of evangelism is purely economical as he teaches us that the coin was in the fishes mouth... so "fishing" is practical, it pays your bills!

"Third, when you spend nickels and dimes on evangelism, you get nickel and dime results. Do you remember the story about the time Jesus told Peter to go find money in a fish’s mouth in order to pay the Roman taxes? In Matthew 17:27 (NIV) Jesus told Peter, "... go to the lake and throw out your line. Take the first fish you catch; open its mouth and you will find a four-drachma coin.” I believe there is an important lesson in that story: The coin was in the mouth of the fish! If you’ll focus on fishing (evangelism), God will pay your bills!"

How Much Does Evangelism Cost?  By Rick Warren Pastors.com

The problem, according to Rick, is being a believer.  His advice is that you really do not stop thinking like an unbeliever.  Some people, like Chris Roseborough in the link there, think that Rick is all wrong about fisher's of men using deception to catch even one fish.  He points out that real fishers of men, cast a net and catch all kinds of fish.  Instead of using God's program, his "net" working in our midst, us doing what God says and fishing where and how he tells us.... Rick is suggesting that you use your own fishing expertise to catch the kind of fish you are wanting to catch.  In order to do this, you evidently need some partiality for the particular kids of fish you aim to catch and then you put what they like to eat on your deadly little hook.

"We must learn to think like unbelievers in order to win them," appealed Warren. "The problem is the longer you are a believer, the less you think like an unbeliever. Your interests and values change. You must intentionally change mental gears when seeking to relate to non-Christians." Using church advertising as an example, Warren said most of it is written from a believer's viewpoint, not from the mind-set of the unchurched. He asked, "When you see a church ad that announces 'Preaching the inerrant Word of God,' who do you think that ad appeals to?"

Rick Warren: Jesus gave five fishing guidelines for evangelism By Jon Walker
Question:
If the ad is not appealing to unbelievers.... would a church that had a different advertisement but still  believed and taught the "inerrant Word of God" still appeal to an unbeliever and entice them to stay?

2 Corinthians 6 14-18
Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers:
for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness?
and what communion hath light with darkness?
And what concord hath Christ with Belial?
or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel?

And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols?
for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said,
I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God,
and they shall be my people.  Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord,
and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you.
And will be a Father unto you,
and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.

Four Laws of a Blessed Church

Four Laws of a Blessed Church

"Laws of a Blessed Church?"

Did God already set forth his commandments in stone?  Didn't God already fullfill the requirements of the law on our behalf in Christ?  Yes... and yes!  What on earth is Rick talking about these "Four Laws of a blessed church for?

True as it is that God has already fulfilled the law in Christ, recently posted at pastors.com was this article,  Four Laws of a Blessed Church, by Rick Warren.  It seems to be a remake of a 2009 Purpose Driven article, of a similar title, Four Laws of God's Blessings. It's probably changed to appeal to a newer audience now, so it is slightly different, but the effect of reading it remains the same.  Gullible readers will be believing that "God's blessing upon your church "brings responsibility." Apparently there are Four Laws (laws that you have to be keeping) if you are, or want to be, that "Blessed Church" Rick is speaking about.

Rick's concepts are biblical, aren't they?  After all, churches do have responsibilities to carry out.  not only that, but Rick is a "pastor" and like all pastors, he uses some impressive quotes of the scripture to make his points in the mind of his readers and hearers.  He even sounds quite well versed and literate because he quotes from all kinds of "Bibles."

Some readers, however, might be unaware of the difference between a translation and a paraphrase and they might just be glad to hear someone using the bible as they speak!  Well hooray for them, but sad for Rick who misleads people in the hows and why's of getting God's "blessing."

Look at Rick's Laws and you will see that these "Laws" are not really "laws."  He doesn't even write them that way.  Rick just calls them laws as he teaches them to his hearers.  Look also how he uses the Bible to back what he says.

The first law, according to Rick, is for blessing to flow outwardly.

"1. Blessing should flow outwardly."
From the Book of Genesis, he shows us how God told Abraham, "I will bless you and you will be a blessing to others."

What blessing is he referring to?  He does not say.  and while Abraham is a great example... it is notable he doesn't mention the blessings we have in Christ.  Are you thinking yet that Rick is referring to earthly possessions and material blessings.... like finances?

Is that number one even a law?  It sounds more like a suggestion. ("Should flow?")

"2. When we bless others, God takes care of our needs.'
Oh, now he mentions Jesus.  Jesus "guaranteed," "Anyone who gives up anything for the kingdom of God will certainly receive many times more in this life and will receive eternal life in the next world to come."

Is this number two, another law?  It sounds more like a principal. Furthermore, if it is a "Law" then who bound to keep this law?  God?

So, when you bless others, God reciprocates?  (And it's a law?)  Hardly.
Rick has it backwards.
Someone even wrote a hymn that says, "Praise God from whom all blessing flows....."

"3.  Our blessings to others will come back on us."

Is this a LAW?  ( If it is, it actually sounds like the Buddhist "law"of Karma.  We do know that we reap what we sow...  Jesus tells us that.  We do know too that the measure you use, it will be measured to you.. (Luke 6:38) But Rick gives his hearers some motivation for blessing others.... (while quoting the Message by Eugene Peterson, which is not a Bible translation but a paraphrase.)  Rick says, in support of blessing others, "Luke 6:38 tells us, "Give your life away and you'll find your life will be given back.  But not merely given back.  Given back with bonus and blessing."

Christian, are you a follower of Jesus, for "the bonus?"  Are you in Christ for the bonus and the blessing Peterson and Warren insist God will be passing out if adhere to this third so-called "law" or are you in Christ because of what Christ has done for you on the cross.

4.  The more we're blessed by God the more he expects us to help others."

Again, is this written as a law? (No.) More importantly, is this a law of God?
Statements like this are written in order to provoke people to give.  Instead however of giving out of generosity or with a cheerful spirit, one is urged to GIVE because of guilt and out of abundance.

(Which of God's infamous Ten Commandments requires one to GIVE anything to anyone?)

To make his point, Rick uses words from the Living Bible, a paraphrase, stating that God says, in Luke 12 that, "Much is required from those to whom much is given. For their responsibility is greater." Rick neglects however to mention what verse in Luke this is and he fails to convey that this verse, in context, even in the Living Bible is about punishment specifically for those who know the master's will and do not do it.  It is not about the proper reciprocation and distribution of goods or finances as Rick infers when he asks, "If your church is blessed with resources that others around the wold do not have, how do you think God wants you to use them to help (or plant) other congregations?"  Rick makes blessing all about money.

So, what is a blessed church and what does it look like?

The picture Rick paints  of a blessed church as one who has wealth and worldly possessions.  His Four Laws all reflect allusions to what can only be described as monetary "blessings" from God and being  given and being received back in bonus too.  Rick attempts to makes your motivation for giving all about being motivated to get "God's blessings" in return.    However, when it comes to serving, helping and even to "giving,"  Christians do not give in order to get.  No, they operate under greater principles than Warren's bizarre  repackaging of the "law" of Karma for Christians.  They are instructed in the bible to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, (and they do) .... how he said, "It is more blessed to give than to receive.'  (Acts 20:35)

Jesus gave us a very different picture of a church blessed by God... (Matthew 5)

  • Blessed are the Poor in Spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven.
  • Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
  • Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
  • Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
  • Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.
  • Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
  • Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God.
  • Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

On Money and Humility

On Money, Rick says,

"I believe people usually fall into one of two categories: Kingdom Builders and Wealth Builders.  Both are gifted at making a business grow, making deals or sales, and making a profit.Wealth Builders continue to amass wealth for themselves no matter how much they make. Kingdom Builders change the rules of the game. They still try to make as much money as they can but they do it in order to give it away. They use the wealth to fund Gods church and its mission in the world.

At Saddleback church, we have a group of CEOs and business owners who are trying to make as much as they can, so they can give as much as they can to further the kingdom of God. I encourage you to talk with your pastor and begin a Kingdom Builders group in your church."

Ministry: How Real Servants Think  by Pastor Rick Warren, 10/23/03

 Does Rick Warren not read
in his Bible that a person
"cannot serve both God and mammon"?
Matthew 6:24

"We all want to be out of debt. But we have to do what it takes to do that. It isn’t easy. It takes discipline. It takes perseverance. But it’s also the right thing to do.... Start paying God and yourself first.  If you want to get out of debt, you’ve got to start tithing 10 percent (paying God) and saving 10 percent (paying yourself). People in debt will balk at this. They don’t understand how tithing and saving will help get them out of debt. But if you wait until you pay off all your bills, you will never save and you will never tithe.  When we’re in debt, we need God’s help. That means we need to do it God’s way. The fact is, whatever area we want God to bless, we have to put him first in. You want God to bless your finances? You better put him first in your finances. Jesus said, “Seek first the kingdom of God and all these other things will be added to you.”
Eight Steps to Getting Out of Debt by Rick Warren, Ministry Toolbox, Issue 373

Pastor Rick really believes that saving
money for yourself when you
owe debt is the right  thing to do?
And, how biblical is it to borrow money
because you need it
and do not have it
and THEN not pay it back?
(It is not.)

How biblical is it
to use t5he act of giving money to God
(tithing)
to evade the fulfillinment of
financial obligation to others?
  Withholding what is due
and calling it "Corban "
(a gift to God)
is hardly "God's way"
of handling one's finances.

Besides, one thing the scriptures say about debt.
Let no debt remain outstanding, except the debt to love one another.
Romans 13:7-9
Rick says,  "It's obvious... your giving through your church family is providing more bang for the buck" so... end your money in today!

"THIS IS AN URGENT LETTER unlike any I've written in 30 years. ....
On the last weekend of 2009, our total offerings were less than half of what we normally receive - leaving us $900,000 in the red for the year, unless you help make up the difference today and tomorrow... It's obvious that your giving through your church family is providing more bang for the buck than anything else you could supportIt's no wonder that our ministry was named the top religious newsmaker of 2009 as reported by Associated Press."
Urgent Letter to Saddleback Church Members, Wednesday, December 30, 2009

On Humility...

"Servants don't need to cover their walls with plaques and awards to validate their work. They don't insist on being addressed by titles and they don't wrap themselves in robes of superiority. Servants find status symbols unnecessary and they never measure their worth by their achievements. Paul said, You may brag about yourself, but the only approval that counts is the Lord's approval.

If anyone had the chance of a lifetime to flaunt his connections and "name-drop," it was James, the half-brother of Jesus. He had the credentials of growing up with Jesus as his brother. Yet in introducing his letter, he simply referred to himself as "a servant of God and the Lord Jesus." The closer you get to Jesus, the less you need to promote yourself."
Ministry: How Real Servants Think  by Pastor Rick Warren, 10/23/03

"Of course, the greatest instructions on how to be happy are the first twelve verses of the Sermon on the Mount. Jesus began his most famous message with "Eight Ways To Be Happy." He is concerned with your happiness, not just your holiness.

Of all Jesus' eight steps to happiness, I believe the first step is the most important. Matthew 5:3 says, "Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." What does He mean by "the poor in spirit?" He's not talking about low self-esteem, or about putting yourself down all the time. Jesus did not die for junk. The Cross shows your value to God. Jesus was talking about humility. True humility. "
What Does It Take To Be Happy in Ministry by Rick Warren, 2001

“The worst sin is not adultery. The worst sin is not murder.. The Bible says the worst sin is pride,” ~ Rick Warren
Christian Post article: Rick Warren Reveals 'The Kind of Leaders America Needs'; Top 3 Qualities Christians Should Look For in a Leader by Kenneth Chan  2008

QUESTION:
Where in the Bible are we told that the worse sin is pride?
(Hint:  It does not say that the "worse sin is pride.")
There are actually several things
the Lord takes a disliking to.
 Proverbs 6, 16-20,
for example, gives us a list.
                                  It reads:

"These six things doth the Lord hate, yea,
seven are an abomination unto him,
a proud look, a lying tongue,
and hands that shed innocent blood,
heart that deviseth wicked imaginations,
eet that be swift in running to mischief
a false witness that speaketh lies,
and he that soweth discord amoung brethern.

Still, these are all forgivable sins, in Christ.
What is the worse sin?
According to JEsus Christ,
THere is only one unpardonable sin.
Learn more about this at:

Read Matthew Chapter twelve and note this verse:

Verse 18: Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin
and blasphemyshall be forgiven unto men:
but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost
shall not be forgiven unto men.

A person can repent of pride, and God will forgive such a sin.

"You know, the three biggest surprises of 2004 were first, as you mentioned, 'The Passion of the Christ,' which was roundly panned by every media, and yet went on to become the third best grossing movie in history. That was the first bit surprise. The second was my book, where for the second year in row, 2003 and 2004, it was the best selling book in the world. And what in the world is a book by a pastor doing at the top of the best-seller's list for two years?"

Rick Warren, speaking on "Larry King Live," CNN, March 22, 2005)

" I now believe that I know why God is blessing this book in such an unusual way. It is more than just a message that God wants to get out to everyone (which is huge).  I now also see that God is using this phenomena to expand the platform for us to mobilize thousands of local churches for global world missions through the PEACE plan.
Right now thousands of churches are doing the 40 Day of Purpose campaign, and now the program has been adopted by corporations (like Coke and Walmart) sports teams (like the Oakland Raiders and Green Bay Packers, NASCAR drivers, and the LPGA) schools, civic clubs, and even prisons. Last year, Paul Harvey told everyone to go buy a copy of PDL on his ABC radio broadcast.   He said "This is one of the most insightful books I've ever read and I will read it again...and again...and again."  In 2004 we expect over 15,000 more churches to participate.

The influence of the book keeps amazing me everyday as I get requests for autographed copies. I have signed books for 1) All the Supreme Court Justices  2) One for Fidel Castro (!)  3) One for the President of Peru (these last 2 were spanish editions), and I even got a note saying that everyone on Air Force One was reading the book recently. But all this is not about us. God's intention is much bigger than the book.  It's all about the global glory of God!  We intend to leverage the attention that the Purpose Driven Life has garnered to bring about a whole new way of thinking and acting in the church about our responsibility in the world. This is a stewardship we must be faithful to fulfill- with humility, generosity, and integrity."
Te PEace Plan Letter, by Rick Warren, 2003

"Most pastors do not understand the power of preaching. But even more important than that is they don't understand the purpose of preaching. I probably have the largest library of books on preaching in America. I've read over 500 books on preaching. Maybe some seminary might come close to that, but I am sure that no pastor comes close to 500 books on preaching. And as I've read them, the vast majority do not really understand...."

There is something called pride.... arrogance, boasting and selfpromotion....
... and then, there is humility.
