About Those "Breath Prayers"

" With practice you can develop the habit of praying silent “breath prayers” for those you encounter."
Source,
How to think like a world class Christian
by Rick Warren

This is Rick Warren's advice.  Apparently, he advocates that Christian people, (evidently he is speaking to those who want to be  important, "world-class" Christians,) to practice, this thing he calls, "breath prayers."

If you take time to look up "breath prayers" on the Internet and you will see that "breath prayers" are equivalent to mantras used in Hinduism, occult practices and some forms of Roman Catholic mysticism.  One must surely ask if this is an appropriate way to pray.  One who wonders such a thing might consider that when Jesus answered the disciples about prayer and how to pray, he did not teach them anything like this.  What Jesus taught his disciples to do was something quite different. In fact, there are teachings that would lead us to believe that we are not only supposed to pray to God in Spirit and in truth, but to tell him what was on our mind and heart, to talk to him and revere him as God Our Father, not to simply " breathe" words at him as if he was some inanimate thing.

In Rick's own words.... he admits that breath prayers are "mantras." He tells his reader:
"Breath prayers are nothing more than mantras. Say “Father, help me to understand what is keeping this person from knowing you.”

Really?  "Nothing more than...."mantras?" And here is some more advice from Pastor Rick....

"Shift from local to global thinking "

and he says,
"God is a global God."

So... to be a world-class kind of Christian... say mantras...(to God)... quit thinking local and think globally.... and remember, God is a "global God."

Actually, for the record here, God is a more than "global;" he is universal... omniscient and omnipotent.

Before you listen to Rick and start praying in mantra fashion so you can be a world class anything, you might want to consider that Jesus' disciples asked Jesus how to pray.... and this was not Jesus' answer.  Rick didn't get these ideas from the scriptures, and he wrote about them not only here...  you will also find "breath prayers" in his Purpose Driven Life book.

The Temporary and the Eternal

Rick is on a "temporal life" binge with his tweets to people.  Here are the recent tweets I happened to notice on the subject. After you read them, think about them a bit.

1.  "When life gets tough, when you're overwhelmed with doubt, remember that you are not home yet."
Sept. 13, 2011

2.  "You will not be in heaven two seconds before you cry out, "Why did I place so much importance on things that were so temporary?"
Sept 12...2011

3.  "Your identity is in eternity, and your homeland is heaven! "
Sept. 9, 2011

4.  "Real believers understand that there is far more to life than just the few years we live on this planet."
Sept 8, 2011

5.  "This is not your final destination. You're just passing through!"
 Sept 7, 2011

6.  "Ask God to help you see life on earth as he sees it... Temporary."
  Sept 4, 2011

Rick says,
1.  "When life gets tough, when you're overwhelmed with doubt, remember that you are not home yet."
Rick Warren
Does this seem helpful to you?
Does it encourage you?
If you are in doubt, overwhelmed with life...
will you be encouraged to know that you still have a long way yet to go?
( "You are not home yet.")
How is this notion that I am "not home yet"
going to help me, really,  in a time of despair?

Why not, something more biblical sounding Rick?
Like, "Don't let your heart be troubled." or"
"Remember, the things God has said and done and that
Jesus is with you always, even unto the end of the world.?

No.  Instead, what is told to us is,
"You are not home yet."
Really, this is not encouraging.
Yes, it;s helpful to remember this is not a perfect world.... that you
are not home yet....but where is the promise of God in sentiments like that?
A statement like that is actually quite hopeless.

2.  "You will not be in heaven two seconds before you cry out, "Why did I place so much importance on things that were so temporary?" Rick Warren

Christian, I am wondering,
do you think that the first two seconds in heaven
will be filled with regret over temporal things?
I doubt it. I kinda thought it might be more like relief and joy...
maybe  a little amazement or wonderment, not regret.
Even so, if such was the case, if you, at that point felt regret, then remember,
the Bible says that  at that time, God wipes away every tear...
and that there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

So.... here is a question.
Why is Rick emphasizing that  life is temporary?
Why does he stress that such "temporal" things are of
little or no importance.

Note also, Rick is not specific about what things are "temporal" here.
So one must ask and wonder, "What "things" is he referring too as unimportant?"
(He could mean a lot of things.)
One must wonder "Why?" is he trying to convince us of  what we already know...  and
wonder, what it is he is trying to sell us as he talks like this.

3. "Your identity is in eternity, and your homeland is heaven!" Rick Warren

Rick, evidently, doesn't want you to be too attached to
your citizenship on earth, as he reminds you of your " homeland."

This is kinda funny, because as you know,
the Apostle Paul was a Christian and he is the
one who informed of of our citizenship(or is it "homeland") in heaven
AND he was also a citizen of Rome,
which was also a citizenship he exercised, by the way.
Acts Chapter 22...  verse 25

You might say that Paul had two citizenships.

did Paul have schizophrenia?
No.
Was Paul perhaps too  concerned about the temporal?
Hardly.

However he valued the rights of his earthly citizenship for some reason.
And so should we who are  are born in America, land of the free.

Also, Paul's identity was not "in eternity."
(Another claim of Rick Warren... one  intended to pull you into
the ideas he sets forth for you to believe in as you
hear him speaking and willingly make Warren your guru guide,
Paul's identity was actually in the person of Jesus Christ,
as it is also for the Christian man or woman or child.

Eternity is nothing you want to be looking forward to, if it doesn't include Christ Jesus our Lord,
because eternity alone is ....nothing more than eternity and
"eternity" without Jesus Christ who redeems out life from the pit, is hell..
.

4.  "Real believers understand that there is far more to life than just the few years we live on this planet."
Rick Warren

"Real believers"?
(This, as opposed to fake ones?)
Well, you either believe or you do not.  You are either hot or you are cold.
Rick hopes you are not just a "believer"... but a "REAL" one.

In all fairness, there may be some truth to Rick's statement, but consider.... it is not simply
the cognitive relaization that there is
"far more" than just the few years we have  on this planet,
that makes one into a (REAL or fake) "believer".

And not only that...

What if the lives we "live on this planet,"
(be it one day or a thousand days)
really do matter
and really do make
a difference? (in "eternity" or in the lives of other human beings.)

What if our temporal  lives and the people we love and know
are important and meaningful
and that what we believe,
and who we believe in ... even our doctrine
and choices do make a difference after all?

What if your life involves saving someones soul by
telling them the good news of Jesus Christ?
What if your life brings joy to a hurting person
or your life intervenes and saves another human life?
Is life here on EARTH really  "just a few years"
Does it have some PURPOSE in every moment we do
live here on earth or should our focus be eternity?
Is your focus to be  eternity?
Should you just abandon your life and responsibilities here upon earth?

5.  "This is not your final destination. You're just passing through! "
Rick Warren

Yes.  "This" is not your final destination.
(So, now that you are convinced of this, maybe
you will not worry to  much when other people want to
come and take your land and possessions away... enslave you..
or change your government and Constitution.)

You're just passing through... on your way somewhere else....
Where?
The grave?

You, if you are like every
other human who is "just passing through," you
might being going to die someday,
and then where will you be?
What, exactly, is your final destination?

You might be going to die someday,
(Might... right?)

Know this now,
today is the day of salvation!
And today, if you hear God's voice,
harden not your heart.
Believe on he one whom he sent so
that your sins will be forgiven and
when you die, you will be in heaven with Him.
Remember,
Jesus Christ was raised from the dead.

6. "Ask God to help you see life on earth as he sees it...Temporary"
Rick Warren

God sees our lives as "temporary?"
Really?
How so?
I wonder, why didn't Pastor Rick simply, plainly, tell his listeners,
2 Corinthians 4:18?
So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen.
For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.
(NIV)

Interesting...

The temporalness of life is pretty obvious...
not something that we really need divine vision to "see."
Yet we do need a special ability to see
the things that are eternal and unseen by physical eyesight..  don't we.
Such is God's  perspective... eternal perspective.

If you have not yet seen the temporal-ness of life for yourself, just watch
your untouched  fruit bowl for a week or two

God made all things good, but sin spoiled it and causes decay and death.  Sure, Rick, We live in a temporal and fallen world... but God has redeemed creation , saved us from our sins in Christ.

What we need to ask god for is not the vision to see life as temporary...
that is a given... we need to ask for God's forgiveness for
our disobedience, our sin.
We can also pray and ask to receive the gift of his one and only son...
Jesus Christ and the reality of his life and death to save us
BY FAITH in him to give us life... eternal life with  him and thereby
see the things that are eternal.

Keep your eyes upon Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith!
HE endured the cross, died was buried and rose again to life
on the third day, according to the scriptures.

Now, why doesn't "Pastor"  Rick elaborate on  things like this?

Truth Be Known....

"I-I actually learned the idea of a campaign, from the communists."
Rick Warren, 2009 interview with George Wood

In the Saddleback model of such "campaigns, a typical home fellowship or "Bible Study" gets changed from a study of God's Word to a study of the Purpose Driven Life.  Instead of being taught via persons who believe in Jesus as Lord and Savior, to  and who are well acquainted with the bible's  text, as well as Christian doctrines of things like atonement for sin, the group can be led, or rather, "hosted," by "anyone.  Yes!  I tis that simple.  And now we know that Rick didn't just think up this idea of communicating his message to people on his own.  After all, he did not learn this in Bible seminary.  No, we heard it sheepishly revealed publicly to George Wood, Superintendent of the Assemblies of God Churches, way back in 2009, and now we can know where he got this methodology from.  Rick told Woods,

"You know, (he stuttered a little bit here,)" by- by-- by doing these, um, "campaigns...." (His tone changed a little bit, ) "I-I actually learned the idea of a campaign, from the communists, ...of all people."  (Nervously chuckling, he continued explaining, how he learned the idea... )

"Years ago, there was a book written, called, Dedication and Leadership.  It was written in the fifties, by the head of the Communist Party of England, who converted to Christ.  He actually became a Catholic.  And he wrote this book on what the Church could learn from the Communists... not about "doctrine"...but you know, we know our doctrine, but "what were some of the tools that they used to help win converts to Communism," and he wrote this book called Dedication and Leadership.  It is still in print, by, a Notre Dame Press.  It's not a very well-known book.... but it's Douglas Hyde--if you are a pastor and you want to pick it up..."
Listen here to the George Woods interview
Click here to read RWQ post

It leaves one wondering....
What did God leave out of his
word that the Church, the Bride of Christ,
needed to  learn from the Communists?
Do the "Communists" really
know what is best
for the people of God?

Apparently Rick thinks they had some great ideas and he even a-plies them to his own campaigns, run in many churches across America today.  George Woods was pretty impressed with Mr. Warren.... and his campaign techniques as well as perhaps Warren's insight into how there were not enough Assembly of God churches and his large 10,000.00 donation to the cause.  Rick's idea, is transformation of congregations.... and in case you are wondering, "transformation" is another word for "change."

Where else have we heard that word lately?  "Change!"

Do you believe in change?

Rick does!  He changes Bible studies into studies of his own books.  He changes titles of leadership positions too.  In fact, the title of what previously  would have been known in the church as a "Lay Pastor" or "Lay Shepherd or Teacher, or even "Leader," in such a Purpose Driven group, or rather,  "Bible" study,  gets changed... to "Host."

What does it mean to host a group in your home?  It means,

H- Have a heart for people

O- Open up your home

S- Serve something to drink

T-turn on your DVD player.

Apparently, according to Rick, its that simple.  They can be a teenager or an adult and they do not even need to know much about Christianity or the Bible.  Just find someone willing to HOST and then let Rick take over via DVD. He will teach them.

Apparantly, Rick learned from those who he thinks have it right, who  "really" are in the know about the power of a "campaign",  and he took their advice.

Ted-X Orange Coast- Rick Warren ---"The 8 Questions of Innovation"

GREAT INNOVATIONS....  "TEDx"
Rick Warren was on a You Tube session that came across my desktop called "TED-X " This aired  May 23, 2011.  Rick Warren was one of several individuals giving talks on "Innovation" that day.

He began his TEDx talk telling the audience that the quality of your life, in any area of your life will be determined by the kind of questions that you HAVE THE COURAGE to ask yourself in that area.  He raised his voice at the "have the courage" part.  He told his audience, "if you don't ask the right questions, you won't get the right answers."

This is worth watching because here, you get
to see Rick Warren in action.
Catch the way he yells at the audience in the beginning,
raising his voice to command some kind
of control over his hearers.
They need these theatrics
in order to listen to the
8 things they "need" to know.
(And note too that he says that he does
not want to talk about himself
and what he is doing... but he talks
about and promotes himself a lot.

Rick says, as he is about to tell you the "8 things you need to know," that, "you better write them down."
You see, you smart people,
(Are you a smart person?)
...will want to know these 8 things that
Rick does and is not so happy to share
with those who desire to
be great leaders, (just like him.)
learn these things from Rick,
And if you are a smart person,
you won't want to
miss a word he says.

Rick says, questioning is an art, a skill that you need to develop.

It's funny, but questioning sort of comes
naturally.  A four-year-old seem to
have no problem asking questions, but YOU,
have yet to learn this all important "skill.   Lucky you,
Rick is going to help you "develop" that skill
by teaching you what "questions"
(out of the millions there really are,
or that you might actually dream up on your own,
to ask......

But, question, smeshtion.... (Note: THAT is a made-up word!)

These really are not even questions.....  No.  No.  No.  They are not questions at all, for Rick suddenly turns them into..."nations."  Yes, Rick slickly, (or is it craftily?) applies the concept of these being the "Eight Nations" or, NO, Wait!  They are changing again....  Rather....... they are the  8 "IMAGINATIONS."  Yes, Yes.. that is it.. "imaginations!"
He tells the audience that these are the  "Nations in your mind."

He also tells us that it is these "8" things he used to develop his campaigns, 40 day programs, various plans and to build Saddleback Church.

So, now, thanks to good ol[ Rick,
you .. yes, even YOU, can begin to ask the right,
(not wrong,)
questions.
Yes.... you...can begin to IMAGINE along with Rick
something better,
bigger, more alive and "innovative"
when it comes to your church, something better
than what has ever been before!

Interesting is this passage of scripture that says:

Because that, when they knew God,
they glorified him not as God,
neither were thankful;
but became vain in their imaginations,
and their foolish heart was darkened.
Romans 1:21
The Eight Imaginations by Rick Warren
  1. Termination- What do I need to stop doing?
  2. Collaboration – How do we do it faster, larger, cheaper, or with a team?
  3. Combination - What can we mix together to make something new?
  4. Elimination - What part could we take out in order to make something similar?
  5. Reincarnation – What has died that we can bring back to life in a new format?
  6. Rejuvenation - How can we change the purpose for why we are doing it?
  7. Illumination – How can we look at it in a new light?
  8. Fascination – How can we make it more interesting?
Pardon me. Did YOU see anything in there, anything, about the Lord?
That is what I thought.  Me neither.

Let's consider Rick's TEDx talk a little more closely,

1. HE says, is  "Termination. "
According to Rick, you can have so many irons in the fire, that you put out the fire. The first question he therefore wants to teach people is to ask "yourself" is,  "What do I first need to stop?" (Before doing anything "new.." He calls this termination thing, creative destruction but then, Rick tells us that as his "mentor" Peter Drucker called it,  he also calls it,  "systematic abandonment."   To explain what termination is more clearly, Rick says, "When the horse is dead, dismount."

Note:  he makes it a clear point to mention Peter Drucker as his mentor. twice.
You can read more about Drucker, here.

"Termination," he says, " is often a key to future innovation."

This , perhaps,  somewhat explains why Rick makes
every attempt to convince pastors
of Christian churches
and their members, that their
congregations are dead, (or dying)
and preaches that Jesus,
He hopes they will
terminate their own church as they
embrace the wisdom of Rick and
implement in their congregations,
at their own expense, whatever
 "innovative" thing he is doing.
P.E.A.C.E. Plan, Daniel Plan,
Celebrate Recovery...
40 days of Purpose, Community, Love....
and Purpose Driven (TM)
are simply the innovative products
Rick Warren wheels, deals and sells

Rick then took the opportunity to drop the name of  Joseph Shumpteter....an economist and political scientist who was perhaps best known for his promotion of "creative destruction," or rather, systematically "terminating" things in order to be innovative.

(Click on his name to listen to an interesting economics
lesson taught at YALE which talks
about Shumpteter in light of Capitalism)

Rick's Purpose Driven Church,, is portrayed as being
so much more productive than all the rest.
We are, no doubt, expected to perceive this as
Rick projects upon us all the astronomical
numerical facts and figures relating
to his "accomplishments" in this world.

Funny thing, is,
we Christians should know and understand that
God's amazing Church
is bound to be productive and alive, if it abides in Him and His Word.
The Church is His doing, not our own.
God is the one who makes all things grow.
He gives life and sustenance to all things.

We see how Christianity has encompassed the globe,
(something clearly attested to by even Rick
as he expounds for us how
he ccould really make use of
the accessibility of the churches
found everywhere in the world,
even the remotest villages.
 to implement his "P.E.A.C.E." Plan

It is these same Christian "churches" who are
and have been labeled as nothing but a "big mouth" by Rick.
Possibly because they are notoriously preaching
the good news of Jesus Christ.
But Rick berates those churches this way and
because they are small he labels them "unhealthy"
only to make the subsequent offer to help doubting pastors get healthy
through his teachings and
be just like Saddleback.

It helps to have Time Magazine and Christianity Today
inform readers of how great Rick is,
and portray Rick as an example of great leadership and
the Christian model of true success,
while he unashamed asserts that if Churches are not Purpose Driven...
(not using his methods or business models
like he and his mentor, Peter Drucker)
not growing exponentially like a yeast,
incorporating unbelievers into church services and worship,
balancing everything just so,
they are "unhealthy."
And Rick philosophy is that like dead horses
that need to be dismounted,
"unhealthy" things should be terminated.

Perfect doubt, it seems, casts about a lot of anxiety and fear.

Rick gives us his own example of terminating old, obsolete and boring things.  He tells about his old, mid-week bible study.  Terminating this gave way for his many and various  "campaigns."  He says that he would have never had so many small groups doing his programs if he hadn't "terminated" that.

2.  Collaboration-
According to Rick, the "collaboration" question is, "How to do.... (anything)  faster, larger,  cheaper and, of course, "with a team."  Stressing the team aspect, Rick says that if you want to have a movement, you have to have a team.... you have to have "partners."

"One of the secrets of Saddleback's growth", Rick told TED-x, is that they "have figured out " (Yes... this is hard to do, something not everyone CAN do, only the really smart can do this "figuring out stuff you know.)  They have, "figured out  how to mobilize people." (Rick also indicated that another term for "collaboration" is Coordination.)  He says you need to have "coordination."

Who is doing, leading planning and implementing this co-ordination?
We can only guess.  Probably Rick.
.
He talked here about the program he has coordinated at Saddleback called  Forty days of Community, and how they had been feeding all of the homeless people in Orange County, all of them!  He said they served up "126,000 meals"...fed them for "for forty days."

Wow...that is a lot of loaves and fish!

As we hear this and many other
spectacular feats of awe and wonder
regarding Rick and Saddleback,
and about the greatness
of his PEACE Plan too,
we cannot help but be impressed with
Super Rick.  There is hardly
a person or thing he doesn't know or know about,
 has done, or can do.
And boy can he coordinate and feed the hungry too.

What did those hungry, homeless people do
for food after the forty days?

3. The third "rule," (He says "RULE." this instance, instead of "question" or "nation,") that you have to ask yourself is..... "Combination"

"What could we mix together to create something new?"

Rick says, "What could we "blend," "merge," "make a synthesis of? "  and tells us, "We need to ask how we can "take things that are the exact opposite and put them together," things -like, "icy hot," and "sweet and sour"  or" peanut butter and chocolate." He then gives the example of his program "Celebrate Recovery" (being the combination of the 8 Beatitudes of Jesus with AA Alcoholics Anonymous' "12 Step" program,) and of course, we also hear about how great and widely implemented it is in prisons even.

This is a little more blatant self-promotion..... but note,
what he is really promoting here is the dialectic.....
Ask yourself, if you are a Christian and know
the truth....  are you willing to exchange it now,
for something NEW, especially as Rick Warren
, infers they are somehow congruent, and juxtaposes it with something false
and creates something completely different from either
just for you and you church and family?
He takes the church, founded on JEsus Christ, and the world, who hate JEsus CHrist,
  two opposing forces,
and he combines and craftily mixes them both
into something creatively "new,"

or is it, innovative?

Is there anything "new" under the sun?

4, "Elimination"- Is the question where you ask yourself, "What part could we take out in order to make it simpler."
Here he also uses the opportunity to announce to all these
TED people, and you and me, his close associates as
he drops a "big name" as a "good friend," like "Steve Case."

Rick tells us that elimination is also known as "taking down the borders."  When he mentions boarders, he mentions also barriers... and he then goes on to explain that these "borders" are like, "emotional borders, it maybe, mental borders, financial borders, ethnic boarders or whatever..."

Can you think of any other borders he could list?

He uses the example of how at the beginning of Saddleback, in 1980 at 25 years old,  he, (being the clever innovator and man of far reaching vision and insight that he thinks he is,) simply had the innovative idea to eliminate the borders of "church walls" and thereby eliminated his need for a "church building," and, by the way, he said he was going to be the one to prove that such a feat of a
church without a building was possible.
And here is the "magic of Rick Warren at work,
while he has you thinking that he didn't use a building,
he did use many "buildings"...
schools, banks, camps, stadiums,
tents, people's homes...
"89" different facilities, he said,
which are most all "buildings,"
but he would have us believe that he is so clever and efficient that ...
he simply got rid of that unnecessary "border."

He says, this elimination part is "the big one."  Probably meaning the one that is most important in the list.

5. "Reincarnation"  Rick says, "The reincarnation question is, "What has died?... but we can bring it back to life in a new form?"

Seriously.
"Reincarnation."
Not only that, when was the last time something really "died"
and anyone brought it back to life in a new form?

Rick says, "You take an old idea that has gone dead and you just reformat it. "

But then we learn... he is only talking ideas....
and then he takes credit for the implementation of the Internet.

Using the example of how for two thousand years the Christian church has used a systematic sequential training of beliefs, called "catechism" in the church, Rick asserts that this is something that has died.  He (via Saddleback) did a reincarnation of it though...  when they (a.k.a. he) "Put "TECH" back in Catechism....)

Clever huh?

It died, ( old idea that it was,  and "we" (meaning he and Saddleback) have taken that old idea, (catechism,)tweaked it, and you know, "reincarnated" it.

How interesting too, that this term, "reincarnation" is
used as the concept of something which is
supposed to be a "rule"to follow, one of the Eight Nations of the mind
for Christians to adhere to in order to be an "innovator," like Rick.

6. "Rejuvenation"- Rick says that this is "Related to reincarnation" The question related to rejuvenation  is, "How can we change the purpose or motivation for doing it?"  (or what we're doing.)   He says,  it's the "How and Why."  It's the "change the motivation" and "change the delivery system aspect.   With the example of his own now famous, Daniel Plan he says that his church is loosing 4,000 lbs a day since January, this because they have just done a little rejuvenation on the purpose of it."

The purpose of.... what?  "Church?"

7." Illumination "How can we look at something in a new light." "You have to look at it with new eyes."  He says human beings have an amazing adaptability... and it takes new eyes sometimes.  After giving us his own life example with a light fixture in his home, he simply adapted to a lack of light over a period of time, he then comments on how we can never solve global problems unless we think of them in new ways.

For example, men and women of faith,
people of all religious orientations can be part of the
PEACE Plan he offers.  They can be Purpose Driven
and part of congregations willing to help slay those five evil giants,
serving the world with purpose" as their foundation,

After all, as he mentioned also,  there were those two imams.

Rick told us, "This is thinking in a new light...."

(Insert PEACE PLAN promo by Rick here.)

For someone who began by stating that he didn;t want to talk about what he was doing, but what you were doing....Rick sure talked about himself a lot.  Maybe this is because the idea is that you will be doing hat he does.  We heard once again about Rick's great innovation  and about how he is the heroic instigator of saving the world through what he calls the P.E.A.C.E. Plan   His plan to get houses of worship everywhere into global health care distribution.

Finally, there is number 8, "Fascination"  Here we ask how to make that innovative thing more "interesting" "appealing" "attractive" ...."mesmerizing."

Rick concludes saying,

" It's obvious,  our nation is in trouble right now." Then he says, "The only answer is "innovation,".... "in education, technology, business, arts... in every sector of society."

"Our nation is is trouble, right now!"and the "only answer is-----
.
---"INNOVATION?"

Really?

Not prayer or Jesus....
No "Biblical Principles," or even the mention
of reliance or or of faith and hope in God,

just:  "Innovation."
Or...is it coming up with your own answers....
or is it the "Eight Imaginations,"
(You know, the "nations" of your mind?)

Ending his talk, Rick says,
"Never stop learning,"because,  "leaders are learners.""  The moment you stop learning you stop leading."

Some will be "ever-learning",...
(See: 2 Timothy 3: verse 4)
but will they every come to the knowledge of the truth?
Will they ever hear the gospel of God preached
about the Lamb of God, Christ Jesus?

Will they, who need no physician because they are so healthy,
ever call on the Great Physician to forgive their sin or heal their land?

Will they be so busy planning, serving, coordinating
and learning, about themselves, their own spiritual gifts,
their own heart and passions,
looking to use their own natural abilities
doing what suits their own personalities,
and having experiences,
...discovering their S.H.A.P.E.for monistry and  this whle they not only strive to ask the right questions to get the right answers and perfectly balance, not one,
but "five purposes" that they learn about from Rick,
in order to be "healthy,"
in their own imaginative "nations" in their mind, mesmerized
with sustaining themselves and their churches and
meeting the physical needs of all the world all the time,
that they never stop long enough to look at Jesus
learn of Him and enter into the rest of God?

It sure is possible as Rick Warren
gets the attention of both the church and the world and
makes the things he is teaching look as if they are the things of God.

But to the church, those with ears to hear what the spirit says, Paul, who actually did know Jesus and men who walked with JEsus as well, who preached Christ and him crucified.... Paul the apostle wrote:

"Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses,
so these men also oppose the truth,
men corrupted in mind and disqualified regarding the faith.
But they will not get very far, for their folly will be plain to all,
as was that of those two men. "

All In A Days Work

I was re-reading some quotes I posted by Rick as he gave his talk on the "Myths of the American Megachurch" with PEW Forum in 2005.  Struck by the realization I did not even comment on them, I have decided to re-post the quotes, with commentary.

QUOTES OF RICK WARREN:
"There is a verse in the Bible that says the intelligent man is always open to new ideas; in fact, he looks for them. And so when Mike invited me to come to this and I saw your names, I really jumped at the chance. I enjoy these smaller, intimate meetings. You know, when you speak to 23,000, 24,000 people every weekend, crowds don't impress you anymore."
                     ~Rick Warren
Pew Forum, Myths of the Modern Mega Church, 2005, Transcript

THINK ABOUT THIS:
What verse says the intelligent man is always open to new ideas?
Rick doesn't mention the verse, but the verse or the wisdom is not the point.
He does this only to infer his own intelligence.

He also should know better than to think that he would
only be talking to intimate group of "names" he,
being the intelligent man that he thinks he is
(and wants you to think he is,)
"jumped" at the chance to meet with.
Note also, how he brags about the numbers of people he talks to "usually."

"Last night, I was in Miami speaking to this huge international convention of all of the Spanish-language publishers and they gave me the city key to Miami, but really I would have more fun with you here today."
~Rick Warren
Pew Forum, Myths of the Modern Mega Church, 2005, Transcript

THINK ABOUT THIS:
Isn't this bragging, and flattery....
Rick says that this meeting was  "more fun" than being honored
with the keys to the city of Miami
and speaking to a "HUGE," (and note,) "international...."
(Question:  Does size get bigger or more important than"international?")
...convention of ALL of the Spanish -language publishers.
His hosts should REALLY be honored that Rick thinks
it is more fun to be here with them today
than what he did the day before,
and that he took this opportunity....
(and flattered that their names impressed
such an "intelligent" man as Rick.)

"As you can imagine, I get a lot of invitations to speak - I get about four or five a day - and so I have been choosing pretty carefully which ones to accept. And I came here because I only speak to influencers, and God has given you a degree of influence. "
~Rick Warren
Pew Forum, Myths of the Modern Mega Church, 2005, Transcript

THINK ABOUT THIS:
Again, his hosts should be impressed that Rick chose to be with them, as opposed to all the other offers he gets daily.... 4 or 5 you know.
He only speaks to "influencers"
(Those others are probably not important enough
to have audience with.) Then comes spiritual flattery:
"God has given you a degree of influence. "
(But probably not as much as Rick thinks
that he has at this point of the conversation.)

"The Purpose Driven life is not just the best-selling book in American history; it's the best-selling book in about a dozen languages."~Rick Warren
Pew Forum, Myths of the Modern Mega Church, 2005, Transcript

MORE FOOD FOR THOUGHT:
Rick thinks his book outsells the Bible.
(He thinks it is that GREAT.)
Perhaps he would like it to replace the Bible too?

"Saddleback is the largest church in America. We had our 25th anniversary on Easter this year. I did 12 services. We had 45,000 in attendance and I preached 12 services in a row. Two weeks later, we celebrated our anniversary and we had never had the church in one location, so we rented Angel Stadium and had 30,000 at Angel Stadium. I have 82,000 names on the church roll."~Rick Warren
Pew Forum, Myths of the Modern Mega Church, 2005, Transcript

THINK ABOUT THIS:
Humility.
What is it, really?
Is Rick Warren a man that displays humility?

" When I wrote "The Purpose Driven Life," I took off seven months and I did not preach, and I did not teach, and I did not lead my staff of 300, but I just wrote the book. And while I was gone, the church grew by 800 people because it's not built on me, it's built on the 9,200 lay ministers in the church." ~Rick Warren
Pew Forum, Myths of the Modern Mega Church, 2005, Transcript

THINK ABOUT THIS:
What did Rick say the "Purpose Driven" church is built on?
What does the Bible say that the Church is built on?

" I know about volunteers. We have 9,200 lay ministers who lead 200-plus different ministries all over southern California. I know these numbers are a little overwhelming, but just to give you an idea, we have 2,600 small groups that meet from Santa Monica to Escondido in 83 cities. And so the church gathers on Sunday for a big service and then meets during the week in homes. That allows us to do all kinds of enormous things. For instance, in November, during our 40 Days of Community, we decided to feed every homeless person in Orange County three meals a day for 40 days. We went out and we found out that was 42,000 people. How do you feed 42,000 people three meals a day for 40 days? Well, it takes a lot of volunteers. And we did - we collected over 2 million pounds of food and those 9,200 lay ministers pulled it off and we fed 40,000 people three meals a day."
                                                                                                                             ~Rick Warren
Pew Forum, Myths of the Modern Mega Church, 2005, Transcript

THINK ABOUT THIS:
IS there anything that Rick Warren does not claim to know?
He knows all about volunteers... and whoa...
look at those impressive NUMBERS
that he has so well memorized and gloats over...
continually..

"While I wasn't known like a Jerry Falwell or a Robert Schuller or some of these media personalities, every pastor in America knew who I was because I put all of my sermons on an Internet site and it gets 400,000 hits a day from pastors. And so, instead of me teaching it on the radio or TV, we put it on the Internet and we allow other pastors to take this material and use it."
~Rick Warren
Pew Forum, Myths of the Modern Mega Church, 2005, Transcript

Impressive huh?
"Every pastor in America"
listens to Rick and his sermons
even preaches what Rick preaches to their congregations,
according to Rick.
They do not even need their Bible anymore;
they can just download Rick.

"And I would just say to that - the reality is that most members of typical churches could not join Saddleback because they would not be willing to meet the requirements. We have very strong standards for requirements. They're pretty tough, and we're not interested in the big membership; we're interested in turning an audience into an army and mobilizing it for good."~Rick Warren
Pew Forum, Myths of the Modern Mega Church, 2005, Transcript

THINK ABOUT THIS:
Here he sets himself up as being somehow
"better" than every other church... or rather...
"most "typical " Christians and
their "typical churches.... as opposed to the
special ones, like Saddleback.

You can see too that he is not interested in ministerial "numbers,"
though that is all he ever talks about is numbers.

"Well, I'm actually speaking at the University of Judaism this next month, where I've been asked to come in and teach the rabbis my preaching seminar. "~Rick Warren
Pew Forum, Myths of the Modern Mega Church, 2005, Transcript

THINK ON THIS:
Rick is demonstrating his own greatness once again,
telling us he is "actually" so much in demand that he is
even being asked to teach Rabbis...
and bragging about it.
Do you suppose he will preach the gospel
of Jesus Christ to them
there at the University of Judaism?
Paul preached in the synagogues you know.
He was thrown out.

" All my life I planned to simply pastor this church for life and train pastors. That's all I wanted to do. And so I've spent the last 20 years training about 400,000 pastors in 162 countries. I didn't want to do anything else. And all of a sudden after the book came out, two things happened. First, it brought in a ton of money. I mean, a ton of money. Second, it brought in a lot of notoriety, which I didn't really want. And I began to say, what am I supposed to do with this affluence and what am I supposed to do with this influence? And I call it the stewardship of affluence and the stewardship of influence."~Rick Warren
Pew Forum, Myths of the Modern Mega Church, 2005, Transcript

You get the idea that he is quite boastful.
And as for all that "affluence," where did (does) it go?
It apparently goes "broke."
In 2009 the word was, Saddleback Church was broke!
Rick Warren in a desparate plea, begged his church for money.

But then, who knows, maybe this urgent plea
was just a gimmick? Perhaps it was planned as a public display
of Rick's "influence." over his congregation, for the media and the watching world?
As it turned out, Saddleback didn't have to close it's doors
and Rick drummed up more money than he asked
his congregation for.

Dedication, Leadership and Rick Warren

It's quite amazing, really, that while Jesus said, "Follow me," voices in the church are trying to make men leaders instead of followers.  They want to bring out the "leader" in you.

You have heard the voices.  You have seen the ads, listened to the sermons, and seen or even read the books by such great leaders and experts on leadership as John Maxwell,  Ken Blanchard, and Rick Warren, just to name a few.  If you listen to these guys, they will have you enthusiastic about your leadership opportunities, attending leadership training seminars, earning your "Masters" ( in Leadership,)  degree, attending a leadership university, in no time..... because see, they are all about this thing called "leadership," and through their fine sounding communication, they want to bring out the "leader",( not the "follower,") in you.

So the question of the day is:  Where does Rick Warren get his big, great, ideas about leadership?

After being informed by media hubs like US News and TIME magazines, even Christianity Today,   about how great a "leader" Rick Warren is, and how he is a man of BIG Ideas.... we should wonder about his inspiration.  Where did he learn what he knows about "leadership?"  How did he learn about building a "mega church?"  Where did he learn what he knows and puts into practice in his life? You might be surprised to know that it's not REALLY the Bible.

Don't misunderstand, Rick Warren mentions the Bible, he went to Bible college, two seminaries, and he hold a doctorate. He reads it, quotes it, and knows a lot about what it says, (except for those "2,000 verses" about God's compassion on the poor that he finally discov3red back in 2002, verses he missed in his studies about helping the poor.)No, he knows a lot about the Bible, but his sources of wisdom and inspiration, his recommendations to other people, are quite interesting.  In fact, in a 2009 interview with the Superintendent for the Assemblies of God churches, George Wood, Rick told the listening audience where he got the inspiring idea for his many "40 Days" campaigns.

It wasn't Noah on the ark for Forty Days and Forty nights....  no, he has mentioned that before, but it's not that,  not really.  It wasn't the number of days that Satan tempted Jesus in the wilderness either.  No.  Warren, told his audience exactly where he got the idea for his campaigns from, and, sadly, it really was not the Bible.

He was talking about how he uses what he called "multiple reinforcements," (the idea of being repetitive with an idea, repeating the teaching he gives over a period of time in various aspects during a week, so as to help people better understand what is being communicated and "mature in their faith,) and he then related this to his 40 Day "campaigns." (In a campaign, he basically is given a teaching role in and over a church and all it's parishioners, programs and ministries for a six week period of time and his sermons and lessons and Bible studies are undertaken by the congregation while nothing else is taught in any aspect of the ministry.) Everyone is anticipated to participate and earn the new thing being taught by the "leader," with pastoral permission and consent, no less.  This is then replicated all over the country in churches and homes near and far.

Mr. Warren told Mr. Wood, and subsequently all of us,

"...a number of years ago, we've came out with what we call our "campaigns."  There's-- some people have heard of the "Forty Days of Purpose" campaign, but we've done a lot of them over the years at Saddleback.  One was called, 50 Days of Faith.  One was called, "Millennial Members."  One was called, "I Want to Grow."  One was called, "40 Days of Peace," and practically every year, we'll do this spiritual emphasis, where we pick a subject and we'll focus on it for an intense period of time and we will hear it on Sunday and we will read about it during the week, and we'll discuss it in a small group and we'll do projects and we'll memorize it, and somehow, by doing all these reinforcements, I have found, the spiritual growth just soars!  More than just hearing the sermons, but doing it, in multiple ways."

Interpreted, this means that just "hearing" it
preached in a sermon is
not as good as how Rick does it
-with his multiple "reinforcement" plans.

He says that it is this extra "reinforcement" that
causes "spiritual growth" to "soar."

On the other hand God's word tells us
that faith comes by hearing, and that it is God
who not only causes things to  grow,
but God who gives the increase.
(1 Corinthians 3:7)

After being praised by Mr. Wood for his great leadership abilities and his influence on all the churches in America, Rick loosened up a bit more and went on to explain where, exactly, his idea for the 40 Day, and other notorious campaigns came from.  Rick said,

"You know, (he stuttered a little bit here,)" by- by-- by doing these, um, "campaigns...." (His tone changed a little bit, ) "I-I actually learned the idea of a campaign, from the communists, (Rick laughs a little... probably nervous laughter,)  "of all people."  (Still almost chuckling, he continued explaining, )"Years ago, there was a book written, called, Dedication and Leadership.

This, in case you missed it, is a sales-pitch for the book.  Rick is simply suggesting that if you are a pastor and want to emulate him, learn as he has, then you should read it too.  Then you will know how to recruit members and build them into leaders

Isn't it interesting that Rick encourages people in leadership position to read this book by Douglas Hyde?  He even went on to mention a particular chapter too, obviously implying that it was something valuable, something of worth to take the time to purchase from Notre Dame Press, and read.  Obviously, he thinks it will help you in your dedication and leadership abilities.  Have you ever even heard of Douglass Hyde?

You might want to research a little and see
who this man is before you buy his book simply
on a Rick Warren namedropping-whim.
Rick fails to mention it, but Douglas Arnold  Hyde
didn't believe in Jesus Christ;
he did however believe in the power of the Vatican,
but he left that scene too when he felt it
had failed him and his aspirations
to change the world.

One can certainly hope he believed in Jesus and that
someone told him the good news of how
Jesus Christ died for sin,
but it is hard to know
for sure because Douglas Hyde,
according to sources like Kevin Morgan,  died having
returned to the Communist/Socialist Party,
describing himself as an
"Agnostic Christian."

Essentially, Rick is instructing American pastors of Christian Churches, to use Communist tools, methods and Communist thinking and strategy.  Why?  And if you're a youngun' then you might want to ask, "Who, or what, are Communists anyway?"

There is a disconnect somewhere.  Have we forgotten human history?  Have we not heard or do we simply ignore what we have heard about the perils of Communist regimes? Do "pastors" not know or do they simply not believe that God gave a method, a specific, sure, guaranteed method for "winning converts" and bringing people into the church?

"Preach the Word!"
(In season and out of season... Preach Christ)

That is God's method, simple and true.

But Rick Warren, apparently, has a better methodology. He learned it from those who knew it well, from people like, Douglas Hyde.
(He learned it from the Communists, and you can learn it too.
Just never mind that it is
based upon human tradition
and the rudiments of the world
and not on Jesus Christ..)

And, is Rick Warren serious?  He seems to be, as he recommends this reading material to the people of God's church.

HE must believe it, for he used Stalin, Lenin and Mao as examples of great leadership when he spoke to the crowd at his 25th Anniversary gather at Anaheim Stadium in 2005.  Only then, he asked what would happen if people (American Christians) were "radical", as committed to Jesus Christ as people had been to those "fanatical " leaders of communism, Lenin, Stalin, and Mau se Tong.

Photo from Orange Country Register
The crowd holds up signs in front of Rick Warren,
signs that say "Whatever it takes"

Yes, Pastor Rick.  "Whatever it takes."
(They will do "whatever" it takes... only who is going to tell them what to do?  And, isn't that what the Hitler Youth told Hitler?)

Is Rick serious?  Does he really believe that the Communists with their Communistic methodologies should be employed or be an example to the church?  Do people in the church just simply believe him?

He must.  They hold up signs and read his books. And now, he wants you, pastor, to go get and read Douglas Hyde's "little known" until "now announced" by Rick, book.

It's weird.

Think of Paul of Tarsus.  Paul said, "Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ." (NIV)
Paul was always pointing to the savior, to the author and finisher of our faith...Jesus Christ.  He knew that it was his job to do so.  He knew that men needed to believe on the one who could save them from their sin, and he preach Christ relentlessly, pointing people to the scriptures so they could believe.  On the subject of what makes a good leader or how to be a leader, Paul would have probably replied, "I determined to known nothing among you, except Jesus Christ, and him crucified."

Who did Paul follow, who was he partnered with and from whom did he learn?

Who should we learn from?..... Douglas Hyde?

Who does Rick Warren partner, or "yoke" with?  From whom does he learn and take his cues?  (Hyde?)  What names and associations does he have a high regard for?  Who does he emulate or use as an example of leadership?  In case you have not noticed, Rick likes to drop a lot of names and ideas upon his "purpose driven" listeners and it is not so impressive that he chooses to use things like the "Communist Party" and "Douglas Hyde" and to present them in some strangely positive "light."

But wait, there's more....

Rick, still being interviewed by Mr. Wood, (Minute 21: 17 if you care to view it yourself.) said quite proudly, as he chuckled once again,

"We actually started small groups with unbelievers as the leader."

Really Rick? (This too is supposed to be seen as a positive thing.)
It makes sense, for if he had actual believers leading these small groups, they might be more like those "nobler " Bereans who checked the scriptures to see if what Paul (the Apostle) taught them was even remotely true.  (Note: They found that what Paul preached lined up with the Old Testament truths of God!)

Without believers as "leaders", no one will really need to question what they are being taught.  They will only get answers being taught by Rick  at the convenience of a DVD player.  You cannot ask a DVD questions.  You cannot ask a group leader who only has the answers Rick gives either.  Conveniently, living room and church audiences who do not know any better, will just believe Rick and whatever he says, cause he is the "pastor," and many naive people may even be willing to do  "whatever it takes" to get the results the leader desires.

"Whatever," is a pretty-big word.  It can entail a lot of things.

Jesus, perhaps, said it best, when he said,
"If the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit."
Matthew 15:14

But this same Jesus, heals the blind, redeems the lost and He sets the captive free!

Colossians 2:8
"See to it that no one takes you captive though philosophy and empty deception, according to the principals of the world, rather than on Christ."

"Pastor"," President" or Possibly, "Pope?"

Rick Warren answers, "How do you organize a mega-church?"

"One of my mentors was Peter Drucker. And he mentored me in principles of leadership for about 20 years."  Rick Warren

"I mean I could be a mayor. Just call me "Mayor Rick" instead of "Pastor Rick." The church I pastor is like 1,000 times as big as the town I grew up in. It’s 100,000 names." Rick Warren

" And so, I actually pastor about 14 other pastors. And these 14 pastors take care of about 450 full-time staff. And those 450 full-time staff take care of over 10,000 lay leaders in different small groups. And those 10,000 lay leaders in different groups and ministries take care of 100,000 people."
Rick Warren
